The Bar Stock Exchange has taken Mumbai by storm with its unique concept of changing alcohol prices as the evening progresses. It’s an app developed by the owners and works more or less on the same lines of the stock exchange only the commodity here is alcohol – just different brands. How it works? As people order more of a particular drink, the price goes up keeping often premium, less popular brands quite low. In the recently opened Pune branch there is a large covered outdoor space and an air conditioned area too. It occupies the entire fourth floor. Décor is smart enough with high wooden bar stools and tables and funky calligraphy on the walls.

Although the emphasis is very clearly on the bar, there are over a hundred items on the food and soft beverage menu which is certainly significant – important since the place is also open for lunch. Teetotallers need not worry since there is a huge variety of shakes and mocktails. Of the 28 vegetarian starters, the missal pav fondue, a cheesy fondue spiked with the flavours of missal with toasted pav cubes to dip, is quite a winner. The Amritsari kulcha platter with three types of kulcha and chole pindi was authentic to the core. Also interesting were the crispy cheddar churros served with tomato jam and tasty piri piri peanuts. In the non-veg, the chicken tikka popcorn and bara kebab with American barbecue sauce were both good. The loaded kheema fries were an indulgence both in terms of quantity as well as cheese sauce. There’s a whole bunch of tandoori items, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads and pastas. I’m surprised to see such a huge variety of main courses including Thai curries and a very interesting butter chicken risotto. If this is not enough there are sizzlers and China boxes – composite Chinese meals served with rice or noodles. Desserts are pretty standard with death by chocolate, brownie stack, caramel cheesecake and red velvet oreo trifle. Prices are very reasonable but just too many dishes on offer which tends to mean that one or two will suffer in quality. Bar Stock Exchange is definitely going to take the city by storm for its unique vibe and incredible pricing. No curated music experience to speak of.
