Baked and Wired with its lovely logo, formerly a delivery service only, has now opened a small eatery on a main thoroughfare in Kalyani Nagar. It’s a ‘no fuss no frills’ kind of place and is really a contemporary version of an old fashioned, Italian style pizzeria where pizza is the focus. It is probably the first pizzeria in Pune which offers a choice of thin crust, Chicago style deep dish (like a pie) and deep pan (thick crust). In the thin crust option, there is even a 28” one available – perfect for a group of friends… and a 30” deep pan, perfect for a hungry cricket team! Start with some garlic bread with cheese. There is a good selection of both veg and non veg pizzas. Do try the veggie mix with kalamata black olives, jalapenos and onions and the Cajun style chicken. We also tried the gluten free base made with rice flour with a ham and cheese topping, which was outstanding. Manan, the brains behind Baked & Wired uses only Belgian ham, doesn’t seem to compromise on quality at all. The deep dish which is literally two inches high is surprisingly not as humungous a task to finish as you would think. The cheese and rich arrabiata style sauce are in perfect balance and the crust is actually more theatrical than filling! Pizzas range from Rs. 220 for an 8” to Rs. 2600 for a deep pan 30”. Desserts run mainly to their famous cinnabuns which do well with a little bit of heating. They also re-heat very well in the microwave if you decide to take away. Of all the flavours, the sticky caramel was quite a treat. Their panna cotta is a healthier version of the Italian dessert made with a mix of coconut milk and cream so the result is quite light. There is also a very reasonable apple pie and chocolate tart on the menu. At the moment only soft drinks are served but this might change later as the pizzeria evolves into a more Bistro menu. A word of warning – Manan’s pizzas don’t taste as good when you take away and re-heat. They are really best eaten straight out of the oven since the dough and the toppings are really fresh.
